Sunglasses are so much more than fashion accessories….They protect your eyes.
When you slip on your favorite pair of shades every time you leave the house, there’s so much more going on than meets the eye. There are so many reasons to put those sunglasses on apart from how they look. They should be worn by all ages, whether it is cloudy or bright, to protect your eyes.
What do you need to look for in the Right Sunglasses for your eye protection?
UV PROTECTION
Read the label to make certain that these glasses block out 100% of UVA and UVB rays. In small doses, the UV radiation given off by the sun boosts Vitamin D naturally. However, in larger doses, these UV rays can cause damage to your eyes and your skin. Too much exposure can cause the eyes to develop cataracts, can destroy the retinas, cause wrinkles and fine lines, and can even cause tissue to grow over the eyeballs (known as pinguecula).
FIT
Proper fitting eyewear will sit away from the eyelashes, however, not so far away as to allow the UV rays penetrate behind the eyewear. They will line up with the eyebrows as well. Glasses that protect your eyes from the sides block out UV light and allergens.
POLARIZED LENSES
Although they do not replace UV protection, these lenses are preferred where there is extra glare, such as at sea, on the slopes, or at the beach.
DARKNESS AND COLOR OF LENSES
Just because the lenses are really dark, it still requires UV protection. Our pupils allow more light in when we wear darkened glasses, and without the UV protection, those rays will penetrate the back of your eyes. The color of your lenses are a personal preference.
TYPES OF LENSES
Lenses are made of many different materials, including shatter-proof glass, plastic, and polycarbonate materials. This is also a matter of personal preference.
