What’s Normal
Eye discharge, more commonly known as eye boogers, eye gunk or sometimes eye puss can have different causes and different treatments. Waking up in the morning with a little bit of discharge in the corner of your eye is normal, according to experts. That “sleep” you rub out of your eyes in the morning has a protective function. It removes waste products and other potentially harmful debris from the tear film and the front surface of your eyes. The substance also keeps your eye lubricated while blinking.
When To Visit A Specialist
Changes in your discharge in quantity or consistency could be a sign of a problem. Common causes of discharge include allergies and dirty contact lenses. Sometimes eye discharge can be a warning sign of something more significant. More serious problems include viral or bacterial infections, an inflammation of the eyelids, styes which lead to an inflamed swelling on the edge of an eyelid, caused by bacterial infection of the gland at the base of an eyelash, or blocked tear ducts. If you are concerned about your eye discharge contact a specialist.
